eSIM Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide for Travelers

Travel eSIM installed, but not working? Don’t panic. Most eSIM connection problems come from a small number of settings: the wrong mobile data line, roaming turned off, the eSIM line disabled, weak signal, APN settings, plan validity, or phone compatibility.

This guide walks you through the most common travel eSIM problems and how to fix them on iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and other Android phones.

If you are new to eSIM, start here: What is an eSIM?

Quick checklist: what to check first

Before trying advanced troubleshooting, check these basics:

* Your phone supports eSIM * Your phone is carrier-unlocked * The eSIM is installed on the correct device * The eSIM line is turned on * Mobile data is set to the travel eSIM * Data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM if required * Data roaming is disabled for your home SIM if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming * Your plan covers the country you are in * Your plan has started * Your plan has not expired * You still have data remaining * You are in an area with mobile signal * Airplane Mode is off * Wi-Fi is off temporarily while testing mobile data

If you are not sure whether your device supports eSIM, read: Is my phone eSIM compatible?

Problem 1: The eSIM is installed, but there is no internet

This is one of the most common issues. The eSIM may be installed correctly, but your phone may not actually be using it for mobile data.

Fix 1: Check your mobile data line

Your phone can have more than one SIM line. If mobile data is still assigned to your home SIM, your travel eSIM may be installed but unused.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Service.
  3. Tap Cellular Data.
  4. Select your travel eSIM.
  5. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching if you want to prevent the iPhone from using your home SIM for data.

On Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network & internet, Connections, SIM Manager, or Mobile Network.
  3. Find the setting for mobile data SIM.
  4. Select your travel eSIM as the data SIM.

Look for wording such as:

* Mobile data * Preferred SIM for data * Data SIM * Primary SIM for mobile data * Use this SIM for mobile data

Fix 2: Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM

Many travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled on the travel eSIM line.

This does not mean you are using your home carrier’s roaming data, as long as mobile data is assigned to the travel eSIM.

Recommended setup:

* Travel eSIM data roaming: on, if required by your plan * Home SIM data roaming: off, unless you intentionally want to use your home carrier’s roaming service

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Service.
  3. Tap your travel eSIM.
  4. Turn on Data Roaming if your eSIM instructions require it.

On Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to your SIM or mobile network settings.
  3. Select your travel eSIM.
  4. Turn on Roaming or Data roaming if required.

Make sure you are turning roaming on for the travel eSIM, not your home SIM.

Fix 3: Turn the eSIM line off and on

Sometimes the eSIM line needs to reconnect.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Service.
  3. Tap your travel eSIM.
  4. Turn Turn On This Line off.
  5. Wait 10 seconds.
  6. Turn it back on.

On Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to your SIM settings.
  3. Select the travel eSIM.
  4. Disable it.
  5. Wait 10 seconds.
  6. Enable it again.

Fix 4: Toggle Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode can force your phone to reconnect to the mobile network.

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  2. Wait 10–15 seconds.
  3. Turn off Airplane Mode.
  4. Wait a few minutes for the phone to reconnect.
  5. Test mobile data again.

Apple also recommends toggling Airplane Mode as part of eSIM setup troubleshooting.

Reference: Apple: If you can't set up an eSIM on your iPhone

Fix 5: Restart your phone

A restart can refresh SIM, network, and carrier settings.

  1. Restart your phone.
  2. Wait for the phone to reconnect.
  3. Check that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  4. Test mobile data again.

Problem 2: The phone shows “No Service”, “SOS”, or “Searching”

If your phone shows No Service, SOS, or Searching, it may not be connected to a mobile network.

This can happen because of weak signal, wrong network selection, eSIM line disabled, unsupported destination, plan not active, or carrier/device compatibility issues.

Apple’s support page for iPhone No Service and Searching recommends checking coverage area, restarting the device, checking for carrier settings updates, and reviewing the cellular line if it does not appear.

Reference: Apple: If you see SOS, No Service, or Searching on your iPhone

Fix 1: Move to a better signal area

Mobile signal can be weaker in:

* Airport basements * Deep indoor areas * Underground train stations * Rural areas * Mountains * Tunnels * Remote islands * Crowded events * Some older buildings

Try moving near a window or outside, then wait a few minutes.

Fix 2: Check that the eSIM line is enabled

If the eSIM line is off, it will not connect.

iPhone

Go to:

Settings > Cellular > Your Travel eSIM

Make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.

Android

Go to your SIM settings and make sure the travel eSIM is enabled.

Fix 3: Use automatic network selection

Most travelers should use automatic network selection.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Service.
  3. Tap Network Selection.
  4. Turn on Automatic.

Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to mobile network settings.
  3. Find Network operators or Choose network.
  4. Use automatic selection.

If your eSIM provider gives specific network instructions, follow those instructions.

Fix 4: Wait after landing

After you land in a new country, your phone may take a few minutes to connect to a supported network.

Try:

* Waiting 5–10 minutes * Toggling Airplane Mode * Restarting the phone * Moving closer to a window * Checking that mobile data is set to the travel eSIM

Problem 3: The eSIM cannot be installed

If your eSIM cannot be installed, the issue may be compatibility, Wi-Fi, QR code usage, device lock, or an already-used eSIM.

Fix 1: Connect to stable Wi-Fi

Your phone usually needs internet access to download the eSIM profile.

Use stable Wi-Fi before installing. Avoid trying to install when:

* Airport Wi-Fi is unstable * You are moving between networks * VPN is causing connection issues * The phone has weak internet access

Fix 2: Check phone compatibility

Not every phone supports eSIM.

Check whether your phone has one of these options:

* Add eSIM * Add mobile plan * Download SIM * Set up eSIM * Add SIM

Fix 3: Check whether your phone is unlocked

A carrier-locked phone may reject a travel eSIM from another provider.

If you bought your phone from a mobile carrier, especially on a contract or payment plan, contact your carrier to confirm that it is unlocked.

Fix 4: Do not reuse a QR code on multiple devices

Many travel eSIMs can only be installed once.

If you already installed the eSIM on another phone, the QR code may not work again. If you deleted the eSIM after installation, it may not be reusable.

Before deleting or reinstalling, contact support.

Fix 5: If the QR code is on the same phone, use another screen

If the QR code is displayed on the same phone you are trying to install the eSIM on, your phone may not be able to scan it directly.

Try:

* Open the QR code on a laptop * Open the QR code on a tablet * Open the QR code on another phone * Print the QR code * Use an activation link if available * Enter manual details if provided

Fix 6: Enter details manually

Some providers include manual installation details, such as:

* SM-DP+ Address * Activation Code * Confirmation Code, if required

Manual entry is sensitive to mistakes. Copy every character carefully and avoid extra spaces.

Problem 4: The eSIM worked before, but stopped working

If your eSIM worked earlier and then stopped, the likely causes include expired plan, used-up data, weak coverage, network congestion, or phone settings changing.

Fix 1: Check plan validity

Your plan may have expired.

Check:

* Start date * Expiry date * Number of valid days * Whether validity starts after installation or first network connection * Whether the plan has already been consumed

Some travel eSIMs start counting after installation. Others start when they first connect to a supported network.

Fix 2: Check remaining data

If your plan has a fixed data allowance, it may stop working after the data is used.

Check your order page, app, email, or provider portal for remaining data.

Fix 3: Check fair usage policy

Some unlimited-style plans may slow down after heavy use. This is often called fair usage policy, FUP, or high-speed data limit.

If your data is slow but not fully disconnected, this may be the reason.

Fix 4: Turn off VPN temporarily

VPNs can sometimes make it look like mobile data is not working.

Try turning off VPN temporarily and loading a basic website.

Fix 5: Check whether you changed SIM settings

Your phone may have switched back to your home SIM for mobile data.

Check again:

* Mobile data SIM * Roaming setting * eSIM line status * Network selection * APN setting

Problem 5: eSIM is connected, but data is very slow

Slow data can happen even when the eSIM is technically working.

Common reasons include:

* Weak signal * Network congestion * Fair usage speed limit * Being indoors or underground * Rural area coverage * Phone connected to a slower network * VPN slowdown * Background app updates * Hotspot sharing

Fix 1: Move location

Try moving:

* Near a window * Outside * Away from basement areas * Away from crowded indoor spaces * To a more open area

Fix 2: Toggle Airplane Mode

This can help your phone reconnect to a better network.

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Turn it off.
  4. Wait for the network to reconnect.

Fix 3: Restart your phone

Restarting can refresh network registration.

Fix 4: Disable VPN

Turn off VPN and test again.

Fix 5: Stop heavy background data use

Check whether your phone is using data for:

* iCloud backup * Google Photos backup * App updates * Video uploads * System updates * Hotspot sharing * Streaming

Pause large background tasks if your plan is limited.

Problem 6: Hotspot is not working

Not every eSIM plan supports hotspot. Some plans allow it, some restrict it, and some unlimited-style plans may limit tethering.

Fix 1: Check whether hotspot is supported

Before troubleshooting, confirm whether your plan supports hotspot or tethering.

Fix 2: Check the correct data SIM

Your phone may only share data from the selected mobile data SIM. Make sure your travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.

Fix 3: Restart hotspot

Turn hotspot off and on again.

Fix 4: Restart both devices

Restart your phone and the device trying to connect to hotspot.

Fix 5: Watch data usage

Hotspot can use data quickly, especially with laptops and tablets. Avoid large downloads, cloud backups, and video streaming unless you have enough data.

Problem 7: WhatsApp, iMessage, or banking apps are not working

If mobile data works but certain apps do not, the eSIM itself may not be the problem.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp usually works over mobile data. If your WhatsApp account was already set up with your normal number, you can usually keep using it with travel eSIM data.

Do not re-register WhatsApp unless you intentionally want to change your WhatsApp number.

iMessage and FaceTime

iMessage and FaceTime may depend on your Apple ID, phone number, and whether your home SIM is active.

Before travel, check:

* Settings > Messages > Send & Receive * Settings > FaceTime

If you need iMessage tied to your normal phone number, keep your home SIM active.

Banking apps and SMS codes

A data-only travel eSIM usually cannot receive SMS verification codes sent to your normal phone number.

To receive bank SMS codes, you may need to keep your home SIM active and make sure your home carrier supports SMS reception abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my eSIM installed but not working?

The most common reasons are wrong mobile data line, data roaming turned off, eSIM line disabled, weak signal, expired plan, no remaining data, locked phone, or unsupported destination.

Should data roaming be on for my travel eSIM?

Many travel eSIMs require data roaming to be on for the travel eSIM line. This is different from using your home SIM’s roaming data. Keep home SIM data roaming off if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Why does my phone show No Service?

Possible reasons include weak signal, unsupported destination, eSIM line disabled, phone locked to another carrier, plan not active, or network selection issues.

Can I delete and reinstall my eSIM?

Not always. Many travel eSIMs can only be installed once. Do not delete the eSIM unless support confirms it is safe.

Why is my eSIM slow?

Slow speed can be caused by weak signal, congestion, fair usage policy, indoor coverage, VPN, hotspot use, background uploads, or the phone connecting to a slower network.

Why does WhatsApp work but SMS does not?

WhatsApp uses mobile data. Traditional SMS requires a phone number and SMS service. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so SMS may need your home SIM.

Why can’t I receive bank verification codes?

Bank SMS codes are usually sent to your normal phone number. A data-only travel eSIM cannot receive those SMS codes. Keep your home SIM active if you need SMS verification.

Can I use hotspot with my eSIM?

Only if your plan supports hotspot. Check your plan details. Hotspot can also use data quickly.

Should I contact my home carrier or eSIM provider?

Contact your eSIM provider for plan, QR code, APN, coverage, and activation issues. Contact your home carrier if your phone may be locked, if you need SMS roaming, or if your home SIM has roaming issues.

Final thoughts

Most travel eSIM issues can be fixed by checking a few key settings. Make sure the eSIM line is turned on, mobile data is assigned to the travel eSIM, data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM if required, and your plan covers the country you are visiting.

Avoid deleting the eSIM unless support tells you to. Instead, try Airplane Mode, restart, mobile data selection, roaming settings, APN settings, and plan validity checks first.

Once your eSIM is working, test it before leaving the airport. Open a website, load maps, and send a message. A few minutes of checking can save a lot of stress later in the trip.
